Aleppo (or Halaby) is one of the most popular chili peppers in the Middle East and is named after the city of Aleppo in Syria where it has been cultivated for centuries. In the Middle East, and also in Mediterranean cuisine, it’s mostly used dried as a powder for seasoning dishes. Its flavor is similar to the Ancho chili and has a fruity raisin-like flavour. Crushed or powdered, the Aleppo pepper can be used as a substitute for crushed red pepper or paprika powder. The sturdy plant has an abundant early harvest. It’s a compact plant and grows well in containers. Great to use as flakes on pizzas, pastas and salads.
